The benefits of coaching

Each individual will have different goals, but what connects every coaching experience is the one-to-one human relationship that is developed between coach and coachee.

As part of this partnership, your coach will use a combination of observation, questioning, listening and feedback to create a conversation rich in insight, to help the coachee in achieving their objectives.

A few examples of what can be achieved through one to one coaching are:
  • Better communication, listening and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to set clear goals and prioritise tasks
  • Better wellbeing and work-life balance
  • Improved confidence as a leader
  • Better problem solving and creative thinking abilities

To what extent has your confidence in managing challenges and opportunities in the current context increased since engaging in coaching?
“I am more confident in managing challenges as my coach helped me to see that I had done so successfully in the past.”
“It is a work in progress, but my confidence is still greater than it was before participating in coaching. I do feel more confident in my abilities in managing different challenges.”
“Through the introduction of the SCARF model, I am able to reflect on things that may cause a negative reaction within myself.  Through this model, it gives me greater confidence to look at the challenges and overcome them.”
“I believe through using coaching questions I can support and empower my team in their practice, and through having more positive relationships with my team and knowing my team I know what works better for each team member.”
“I feel like it's made me speak out more and share praise and encouragement with other. It has helped me stand up for myself when I was going through difficulties and doing so has strengthen relationships and more respect given.”
“I have cascaded my knowledge gained with my manager and are implementing current strategies in our weekly team meetings and placed it into our improvement plan. I am also using strategies throughout the day when communicating with my team.”
“I adapted my thinking around an upcoming interview (excitement as opposed to nervousness). Although not successful, some of the discussions within the coaching sessions allowed me to move on much more positively then I would have in the past.”

How does it work?

The coaching service is provided by the Scottish Government in collaboration and delivered by Know You More. When you sign up you will be asked to share some information about yourself to help us find the right coach for you and to help us to assess the effectiveness of the service. Your profile should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete.

All personally identifiable information will be held in strict confidence and will not be shared with any other parties. The content of your coaching sessions will remain strictly confidential between you and your coach. More information on how your data will be handled will be available if you apply.

You will be matched with your coach and notified via email. From there, your coach will guide you through a process that will start by helping you make sense of what is happening for you right now, and to clarify what you want to focus on and the difference you intend to make for yourself through coaching.

They will work alongside you to help you achieve your goal, tailoring the journey to suit you by using the process, skills and tools that will support you best. There is no ‘one right way’ for this kind of dialogue to work. You and your coach can work together with as much or as little structure as you wish and decide the balance of reflection and pragmatic action that suits your needs.

You will also be supported to develop some self-coaching skills to recognise and manage triggers as well as identifying your existing strengths that have helped you face challenging times in the past.

You are likely to conclude your coaching with new ways of understanding yourself and your situation, clarity as to how you can play to your strengths and further strategies available to you for staying on track.

You will meet your coach online using a virtual face-to-face tool that suits you and your coach. You can divide the two hours available to you however works best to achieve your aim.
